DAISY

“What was that all about?” Dee asks the second the door shuts behind Luke.

“Shh,” I mutter. “He’ll hear you.”

“Nah, he won’t.” Noah peeks out the curtain like some lurker. “He’s already all the way down the path. Holy, the guy’s got long legs. No wonder he was a big-time soccer dude back in school.” Dee shoots him a look, and he shrugs. “What? You’ve got to respect the guy’s athleticism. Even if he has the most boring job known to man.”

“Luke doesn’t think so,” I say, shifting on the couch. Noah’s abrupt entrance made me jump, which made my leg jump, and therefore made my foot move from its previously cozy position on the armrest.

Not to mention my previously cozy position. Which was very, very close to Luke’s face. With his hazel eyes boring into mine so intensely…

Even now, the memory makes blood race to my cheeks. Unfortunately, Dee has eagle eyes, and a smirk grows on her lips. “So we did interrupt something. Was there a little hanky panky happening on the couch?”

My hands fly to my cheeks, which are, indeed, warm. “Dee!”

“How inappropriate!” Noah admonishes Dee. Like he’s not the worst of the bunch when it comes to suggestive comments. He backs away from the window and heads towards the kitchen, whistling. “This all sounds like stuff I shouldn’t be hearing so I’m gonna find snacks. Dee, do you have any of those ice cream bars left?”

“You’re lactose intolerant.”

“Only sometimes.”

I fall back on the couch, and Dee pulls up the chair that Luke recently vacated, getting in real nice and close. “Daisy, seriously. What’s going on? Why was Luke Brooks sitting in my living room, warming up my chair with his lovely butt?”

“Ew, Dee.”

“Kidding. But not really. He does have a nice caboose.”

I sigh loudly. “How old are you?”

“A hundred!” Noah shouts from the kitchen.

“Weren’t you looking for those ice cream bars, creep?” Dee shouts back, then taps my knee. “Come on. Ivy isn’t here so I’m all you’ve got. And I know you, you want to talk about this. What’s going on with you two?”

She’s right. Ivy isn’t here, and I wish she was. But then again, maybe I don’t. Because how on earth could I explain to her that I’ve had feelings for her older brother for years? And that, even though I tried so hard to fight them, they’re now being unleashed again like a freaking flood breaking through a dam? Not to mention the moments when I’ve wondered if Luke might actually be feeling something too…

It all started building up while Luke was making dinner. I’ll admit that maybe, potentially, sometimes, I like to keep busy with my eight to ten jobs because it keeps me occupied. Keeps me from thinking too much.

Well, I ended up doing exactly that—overthinking. And I broke down and texted Ivy, telling her only that some nameless, faceless man that I’m attracted to has started being sweet with me out of nowhere, and maybe even a little flirty.

I did not mention that said nameless, faceless man was her freaking brother, of course.
